We travel often in our car for long periods of time and my older children love to keep busy. I am not a huge fan of the DVD-equipped cars because I feel that children typically get enough TV at home. What is your business?
KidsTravelHappy.com is a website dedicated to high quality, unplugged travel games, toys, lap trays, books and activities for kids of all ages. Items are great for on the go, or play at home. I also have a small storefront in Bethel, Maine that’s open 3 days a week.
Why did you choose this business?
Every time we’d travel with our now 5 and 2 year old sons, I’d pack a highly anticipated ‘activity bag.’ After doing this again for a trip last April to Hawaii, I realized that other families could perhaps benefit from all of my trial and error and product research. I wanted to create a site where travel activities weren’t just a “button” but an ENTIRE website of options. It took 4 months to hand-pick the online store’s opening inventory (now nearly 600 items from over 45 brands) It’s fun to learn which things were good picks, and which things may evolve into something else. It’s a dynamic inventory, and there are SO many choices out there.
What is your favorite aspect of the business?
I love the idea of helping other families embark on the great adventure of travel with their kids. With a little luck, my products make the whole experience a bit easier and less stressful for all involved. I’m thankful that it’s flexible. The business allows me to be home when my 5-year old gets off the bus, and I can have my 2-year old with me all day (although, those are NOT my most productive hours!). I take pride in the fact that most of the offerings are ‘normal’ sized toys, and thus work great for on-the-go OR play at home, long after the trip. Another unique aspect of KidsTravelHappy.com is that we provide 7 options for on-the-go playing surfaces (trays and lap desks depending on age, car seat type, travel mode etc.). Then, one can shop by tray type to find which toys work best for their choice. OR, there is the ‘no tray necessary’ category. The other aspect of the business I really enjoy is that it challenges me in a different way than parenting does.
What do you enjoy most about Maine?
Maine is where I was born, and having lived away for over 15 years (college, career, etc.), I love being back near most of my immediate family, especially my amazing grandmother who is 90 and still lives alone. We also live in the town where my husband and I met. We love the outdoors and we are minutes from mountains, trails, ponds, and plenty of fresh air to help us plan our next adventures!
