On with the show:
As with so many introductions these days, I met the owner of Kubit2me on twitter.
I looked over her website and quickly wrote a note saying, “I have used balls in classrooms to get kids to open up and talk but this is so much better!” To my delight Mary Kay shipped two boxes to me: one for our mini human #1 (10 years old) and one for mini human #2 (3 years old).
I knew exactly what I was getting – a simple yet brilliant communication tool. A self esteem building game mixed with a little empowerment.
Seems over the top? It’s really not when you break it down:
- Research has shown that playing games gets kids to open up and talk
- We relax when playing games
- We have fun and de-stress when playing games
- We laugh when playing games and laughter is good for the soul – those who laugh often live longer
- When kids feel safe, they talk
- When kids play communication games, they open up without even realizing it
- Games encourage social emotional development
- Games increase intelligence and self awareness
- The list could go on and on…
Our 3-year-old loved her Kubit2me game although she thought I had given her a fantastic new pillow. She said, “Oh, mommy! It’s soooooo soft! Is this for MEEEE? I love it.” She promptly took the cube to bed with her at nap time. As soon as I showed her the cards inside the sleeves she spent a good hour naming them all. Soon we will teach her that it’s actually a toss and catch game. LOL.
When my son saw his Kubit2me he asked what the heck it was. I showed him the game and explained the rules. “Let’s play it NOW” he said. For three nights in a row we played the game until all cards had been circulated more than once and we had memorized each other’s answers. We learned all kinds of things about one another that might not have otherwise come up in daily conversation.
Once we had used all of the cards a few times, I went to the Kubit2me site and purchased two more boxes of cards
They arrived 3 days ago, however, I am saving them for Christmas. My folks are coming and I want to play the game with them, using our new cards. My parents always had games in our home when I was growing up. From Memory and Monopoly to Pictionary and Scrabble. My childhood is filled with memories of game playing, laughter and family fun challenges.
This is one tradition I have worked to pass down to my kids from their births. We have developmental games and toys spread throughout our home. We try to make a point of playing games on a frequent basis.
My review is really quite simple: games should be in every home and classroom and every home and classroom should be equipped with at least one Kubit2me.
Any questions?
Be sure to stop by the Kubit2me site whether you are a parent or teacher – there is something for everyone!
