Thanksgiving Tips
(Tweeted on Friday, November 20th, 2009 by Shara Lawrence-Weiss)
- Buy groceries at least 2 days prior. You need to plan for the meal so you won’t have to rush to the store, last minute.
- If possible, invite someone for dinner who does not have family or friends. So important that we share what we have with others.
- Most schools/churches/foods banks are running canned food drives right now. Donate what you can to help out. Have your kids help w/that!
- The best way to HAVE thankful kids is to BE a thankful parent. Model thankfulness by SPEAKING out loud what you are thankful for.
- Make a point to do crafts with your kids. Bonding…modeling thankfulness, etc. Play this game together as a family (or classroom): http://www.bingnote.com/blog/thanksgiving-fun
- If you are a family of faith, play songs of thanks while you back/cook/do crafts. Music is a great emotional tie-in.
- Have your kids help you bake and cook the meal. Teaches math skills, social skills, comprehension and more.
- Call around for meal deal prices if you do not cook. Walmart is offering a great deal on Thanksgiving meals; others may, also.
- Countless recipes are online now. I like about.com, allrecipes.com, familyfun.com, marthastuart.com and more.
- Don’t have anywhere to go? Put the word out at church or in your community. Our church does that so we then know who to invite!
- Don’t over-eat. Pace yourself and eat enough…but not too much. Teach moderation to your kids – this will help with will power as they grow!
- Make table centerpieces with your kids by using recycled items (toilet paper rolls, tissue paper, etc). Use this time to teach the 3 R’s! (reduce, reuse, recycle)
- Include exercise in your weekend plans. Walk together, play Turkey Bowl (flat football), etc. Model healthy habits for your kids!
- Talk about the meaning of Thanksgiving & the history of it. Get a book from the library to help, if needed. Read that together.
- Bottom line: Don’t let this Thanksgiving pass by without helping someone, teaching your kids the meaning, etc. Slow down & enjoy it!
