AVON Review and Giveaway (in support of breast cancer awareness)

Lisa has been a Mommy Perks Partner, on and off, for about two years now. Her latest adventure is the AVON industry. Lisa has kindly offered to give away a beautiful watch to one Mommy Perks reader in support of breast cancer awareness. *To enter for the watch (below), comment on this post. That's it! One winner will be selected at random.org. Giveaway closes on October 20th. This giveaway is now CLOSED. Comment #12 was select at random.org. Congrats and thanks so much to everyone who entered, commented and shared their stories! AVON has been a long standing part of many of our lives. While I was growing up, my mother used to fill our holiday stockings with all kinds of affordable goodies, including AVON products: chap-sticks, lotions, nail files, bubble bath, soaps and more. My three sisters and I would be stocked up for the year and my parent's bank account remained un-stressed. With items starting around .79 cents, it wasn't hard for mom to fill our stockings on a budget. AVON still offers smokin' deals on a variety of products. I actually love the Marc line, personally. I own a dress from Marc and two jewelry sets (not that I wear them much being a country girl but when I do, I always get asked, "Where did you get that?"). I also own two headband hair scarves from the same line. It's a little more 'sassy' than AVON and caters to a younger generation (yeah, I'd like to consider myself 'younger' for a while longer, thanks). Last year I scored a CUBS watch for my son from AVON for $19.99. I also purchased a CUBS bath towel and an alarm clock. They really do have more to choose from than you might expect! Lisa can be contacted for purchases from either AVON or Marc. Mommy Perks members and readers are invited to enter code "REPFS" to receive FREE shipping (50% off for International orders). *Please note: It is not Mommy Perks' intention to solicit clients for Lisa who already have an AVON rep. However, if you do not yet have a rep, we invite you to contact Lisa. You won't be disappointed - she's a sweetheart!

The Boy's Store : Review and Giveaway (baby shoes)

PA010002Today I am reviewing one of my favorite clients: The Boy's Store! (All of my clients are my favorite, by the way - I only work with people I like! :-) ) *This giveaway will close on October 4th at midnight (AZ time). This giveaway is now CLOSED. Congrats to Kathy P. for winning!! Thanks to everyone who entered and please come again! Suzanne is a sweetie and I have purchased from her site more than once. I have two boys and have a hard time finding great, high quality items for them that can be passed down and used by more than one kiddo. Suzanne really has a eye for quality and knows what to buy and stock in her online store. She travels to various locations to find top notch items, in case you ever wondered. I recently ordered a pair of Vincent shoes for my youngest child: Swedish size 19 (size 4 toddler US). Being that my baby is a chubby bubby, the shoes would not even slide over his fat little feet (yes, he was breastfed and was simply born a big guy who will most likely play football!). My misfortune is someone elses' blessing. Want the shoes? Winter is coming - these would be perfect for your own child or as a baby shower/holiday gift. ***Comment below to enter! More ways to win:

  • Follow this blog and leave a comment that you did so - ONE extra entry
  • Visit The Boy's Store and tell me what your favorite item is - ONE extra entry
  • If you make a purchase from The Boy's Store leave a comment below and you will receive THREE extra entries
  • Post this giveaway on your own blog and leave a comment with the link (this promotes YOU, too!) - TWO extra entries
  • Tweet this giveaway and leave a comment telling me that you did so - ONE extra entry
  • Post to your own fan page and leave a comment with the link (this promotes YOU, also!) - TWO extra entries

Maryland Marketing Source, Inc. : Interview and giveaway (come enter!)

[caption id="attachment_3988" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Mother and daughter working together - read more and get to know how this company was founded!"][/caption] *Comment below to enter for a goodie bag full of the following items: (one winner will be selected at random.org after January 20th).

  • gym-style bag
  • reusable shopping bag
  • key chain
  • two bendable Frisbees
  • several hyper-color pens!
This giveaway is now CLOSED. Comment #53 was selected at random.org. Thanks to everyone who entered! Mommy Perks is happy to introduce you to Maryland Marketing Source, Inc. I was first introduced to Michelle (one half of this mother-daughter business team) through a mutual contact and friend: Louise, owner of Signing Families. Thanks, Louise! Funny thing: Michelle had never won a giveaway until she came to Mommy Perks. She has now won...gosh...I think 5 or 6 items through our site. She's a winning machine here. I keep telling her that random.org really has a great love for her :-) One with the interview now! Tell us a little about your business: We are a market research company established in 1986.  We conduct focus groups, onsite interviews, telephone interviews and web surveys.  In 2001, we added to our capabilities and became a full service research company, meaning we could also develop research plans, design  quantitative questionnaires and analyze statistical results. To continue to expand the business we also purchased one of our competitors in 2002.   In 2004, we were able to upgrade our full service qualitative research capabilities to include screener design, moderation, and analysis and reporting. What/Who is your target market/audience/client base? Our clients range from other market research companies to advertising agencies and PR firms.  We also work directly with the end users as well, which can be just about anyone. How did your company start and WHY? The why is simple - when I had first begun the business, I was a single mom and I wanted hours that are more flexible so I could be home when I needed or wanted to.   I actually started working in this industry when I became pregnant.  I worked from my house conducting interviews.  After my daughter was born, I continued working at home conducting research.   As my daughter grew older, it became more difficult to work from home so I started working part time for a research company located in an area mall.  After my separation and divorce, I went to work full time.  Each day I loved the industry more and more.   The only issue I had was that working full time gave me no flexibility with the things I wanted to do at home and with my daughter.  Being a single mom I also needed more job security than I was given. I was lucky enough to have someone come through my office and see my talents , and, having worked with me, also become willing to invest in me.  I also wanted to prove to myself that I could do this.  It was very important to my self-esteem and important to show my children that with hard work and a little luck, you can accomplish big things. What words of advice can you offer to other moms in business? Having loving children helps a great deal.  You should also have a strong support system.  In my case, it was my husband who I married just 10 months after I started my business.  He took care of most of the home chores so that I could concentrate on running and expanding my business. Are you giving anything away today? If so, what is it? Yes!  We are providing one lucky winner with a goody bag of promotional items – including a gym-style bag, a reusable shopping bag, a key chain, two bendable Frisbees, and several hyper-color pens! TheBirthtoFiveBook*Comment below to enter for your own copy! One winner will be selected at random.org (please see interview question #9 for the entry requirement). Giveaway ends on November 5th.

This giveaway is now CLOSED. Thrifty Jinxy was selected as the winner (at random.org). Congrats and thanks to everyone who entered!

While on a recent trip to Oregon I had the pleasure of reading “The Birth to Five Book” by Brenda Nixon.

Our kids have about 300 books throughout the house, I would guess. Between my husband’s collection and my collection we probably own close to 3,000 books in total (some are in storage). In an effort to keep our books nice, I typically have a rule against dog-earing the pages. As I read Brenda’s book I found myself dog-earing every other page. It was a bit ridiculous, actually. Half the book is dog-eared now.

I ended up highlighting some pages and circling the text on other pages, in an effort to draw my own attention back to concepts that really stood out for me. However, with so many pages written on now, I’d have a hard time choosing.

One of the things I was thrilled by was an endorsement on the back of this book, written by Dr. Sally Goldberg. Dr. Sally and I worked on numerous projects together between YMCA and DS Network workshops and book designs to various ideas for early childhood education. So, in all fairness, the book was an easy sell for me even before I began reading it…knowing that Sally had already endorsed it :-)

Between encouraging parents to hold their newborns when feeding, to fostering quality play time and hands-on activities, to using real photos in learning, my own educational philosophies certainly seem to mesh with those outlined in The Birth to Five Book. I have no doubt this book would be loved by preschool teachers and parents across the globe.

Two thumbs up.

On with the interview!

BrendaNixon1. Tell our readers a little bit about your background.

I earned a Masters degree in education – I’m a teacher at heart – and have raised two girls. Besides the formal training and the “Mom” experience, I’ve served as a certified parent educator, preschool teacher, and substitute teacher in the public schools.

In 1996, I launched a professional speaker career; speaking to parents and childcare providers at schools, churches, and conferences. In 2001, my first book was published. Since then I’ve contributed to 25 books and in 2009, my second parenting book, The Birth to Five Book was released. I’m excited to learn that it was awarded the 2009 Good Parenting Seal.

2. What prompted you to write this book?

Building stronger families through parent empowerment is my passion and profession. I fulfill this mission through education in child development/behavior and encouragement.

While being on the speaker circuit, tons of parents ask me about a book. The first book sold out and The Birth to Five Book, giving parents a jumpstart on a successful parenting career, was needed. New research, answers to commonly asked questions, examples, stories, and guidance for everything a parent needs in childrearing from the crib to kindergarten is in The Birth to Five Book. I truly hope to give parents confidence and competence in their enormous and sacred task.

3. If you had to name your favorite chapter, which one would it be?

Oh dear, that’s a tough one! Since I love helping parents know what’s normal – and not – in development, I guess any of the chapters where I sprinkle on a bit of development information. Oops, but wait, I do like the potty training chapters because that’s a huge angst with parents. “The Power of Play” is a potent chapter and I so wish today that children had more opportunities to just run outdoors and play without structure or adult interference. The value of free play cannot be overestimated, for one thing it helps a child with emotional stability. Well, now you see just like a family, I cannot pick one favorite chapter anymore than one favorite child.

4. What is your #1 tip for expecting parents?

Read all you can, ask questions, be a learner. “Children are complex and unique beings, yet they do have much in common. From the moment they come into our lives they bring us exhilaration and exhaustion. And raising children is the greatest – most challenging – career any person can attempt,” p. 199 The Birth to Five Book.

5. What is your #1 tip for new parents?

Respond immediately – and calmly – to your newborn. Research show that in the first 6 months if a baby feels his cries are validated by a caring parent, that baby will not cry as much or often later on. The first six months build a strong bond and trust between the baby and parent plus those are the months a baby’s brain is laying the pathway for emotional control.

6. What is your #1 tip for veteran parents?

Trust your gut. Do what YOU feel is right for YOUR child; don’t copy other parents, stand in line with government agendas, compare your parenting skills, or compete with anyone else. Just do what is right for your unique child(ren).

7. Are you an empty nester now?

LOL – some people call it “free bird” rather than empty nester. In a way I am but, since we have a college daughter who comes home during breaks and holidays, I don’t feel “empty.” I’ve been blessed with two fabulous daughters and a great husband, so I’ll never be empty — if anything, I’ll always have full memories.

8. How can people contact you?

www.BrendaNixon.com

9. Are you giving away a book with today’s review?

If I’m provided with a winner’s address, I’ll see she (or he) gets a complimentary copy of The Birth to Five Book. The only thing I ask in return is an honest review posted to amazon and bn.com.

10. Any final thoughts to share with us?

I once saw a bumper sticker that said, “Childhood is a journey, not a race.” Are you prepared to be your child’s journey mate? Rise above your doubts, fears, or busy schedule and walk through each day in this short season in your life. Those words are my final thoughts in The Birth to Five Book.
